On our third day in Prague we decided to explore the new town, Nové Mêsto. Having slept in quite late we made it to Wenceslas Square around midday. The square is about as much of a square as Times Square in New York. It's more of a very long, wide stretch of road, but it's quite an impressive place with much interesting architecture to look at. At one end of the square is the Wenceslas Monument, which for now was dedicated to victims of terrorism and people had placed wreaths here.
Having taken in the sights and grabbed a quick lunch, we proceeded to the grand Nárdoní museum. This had a superb entance hall with red carpeted stairways and marble floors, but very rude staff of the kind that spit at you for mis-counting your money. The vast geology collection was fun to look around, and there were the usual natural history and paleontology exhibits.
We explored around Nové Mêsto for a few hours and then went in search of a hostel I had heard of called Island Hostel, with the purpose of booking a night there for our last night before the flight home. This was, as the name suggests, a hostel on one of the islands in the middle of the river. We didn't find it, but we did find a strangely empty and peacful park in the middle of the river. Walking back we saw something very strange indeed - an orchestra floating on the river. Each musician was standing in their own boat (some of them drifting gradually away from the others) and the sound was somehow relayed to speakers on the bridge. Quite extraordinary!
In the evening we had a new roommate from New York join us. We all went out for Pizza at a place just round the corner from the hostel. I am pleased to say that they make proper pizza bases here - the really thin ones that you can roll up, as found in Italy. After some beers we returned to sleep in preparation for our exciting trip into the unknown tommorow.
