CNN 8th August

There was no Jerusalem Post by my door this morning.  I will try to find one today.

Last night CNN had a brief interview with the editor of the Jerusalem Post, a British guy, it would seem, who said that Israel feels that the rest of the world doesn’t understand what’s at stake.  He said it was absolutely an existential struggle.

Meanwhile, the next item was about how strong Hezbollah is.  They are funded and supplied by Iran.  According to CNN, they are well equipped with night vision, good rifles, good communications, and they know how to use their equipment.  They are well trained, disciplined and organised like a proper army, unlike Hamas which is only just starting to get organised that way.  Not only that, they know the land and have the support of locals.  There was talk of secret caves they can strike from and booby traps — they have had twenty-five years to prepare for this war.  All this makes the threat seem all the more serious than I thought.  It’s a threat that Israel definitely needs rid of once and for all.

There was also a CNN item about the drone that the Jerusalem Post reported yesterday.  Not much more information though, except that they are not particularly large or sophisticated but could be easily weaponised by adding a warhead.  They are easy to shoot down, though.

My impression of CNN’s coverage is that it is not biased against Israel in the same way as most of the British media.  They are covering the Lebanon humanitarian situation, but it is balanced with reports of the problems Israel is facing.  It was a CNN reporter who spoke out about Hezbollah’s media management.  Having said that, I think I *might* have spotted what looked like the same stock footage of the same collapsed building I’ve seen many times before.  I can’t be sure about this, but there is cause to be somewhat skeptical about video footage and photos from the media.
