Two teenage girls are shot dead with an automatic weapon, and then we are told that there is an ever increasing gun culture in our inner cities.
I’m sure this will come as no surprise to the thousands of law abiding gun owners who had their posessions taken from them because of the Government’s kneejerking after the Dunblane massacre. Making handguns illegal made it no harder for criminals to get hold of them. That was always obvious to all but the voting Daily Mail readers.
And yet the Government does not learn. Instead it knee jerks once more. There will be a minimum of five years in jail for possession of a firearm, they shriek. For possession? The idea of punishing someone because of what they might do is abhorrent. “Taking my gun away because I might shoot someone is like cutting my tongue
out because I might yell `Fire!’ in a crowded theater,” said Peter Venetoklis. I find it odd that I am more afraid of what the state will do to me if I take steps to defend myself than I am of that from which I might need defense. Moral issues aside, surely the risk to the policeman apprehending a suspect is greater if that suspect is armed and faces at least five years in jail…
The real causes of rising gun crime are laws that leave guns in the hands of only criminals, and laws that make crime such a lucrative business, namely drug laws. But that is another rant.
